Two numbers that point opposite ways
Do I need to be on Reddit for AI to recommend my business?
Not as a deliberate tactic, on the evidence we have. The engines in our sample wrote 595 searches of their own and exactly one of them mentioned Reddit. Yet they cited reddit.com in 34 of 168 local answers. Reddit is reaching the answer, but not because an engine went looking for Reddit.
Searched for once, cited 34 times
These are two different measurements on the same 188 answers, both re-derived from the stored responses on 1 October 2026.
| Domain | Searches naming it, of 595 | Local answers citing it, of 168 |
|---|---|---|
| reddit.com | 1 | 34 |
| bbb.org | 30 | 16 |
| yelp.com | 2 | 1 |
Reddit and the BBB are the two ends of this. The BBB was sought, by name, 30 times, including searches restricted to bbb.org that named one local company. Reddit was sought once and arrived anyway, which is what you would expect from a site that ranks well in ordinary search results for discussion-shaped queries.

What AI searches for for the 595 searches, and which sites AI engines cite for the citations · 188 API answers, of which 168 name Cincinnati or say “near” · ChatGPT (gpt-5.4), Gemini (gemini-3.6-flash), Perplexity (sonar) · sampled 24 and 25 August and 16 September 2026 · a domain counts once per answer · Vector Index’s own research runs, no client data.
Which engine, because it is not evenly spread
Of the 34 local answers citing reddit.com: Gemini 14 of its 68, Perplexity 13 of its 32, ChatGPT 7 of its 68. The BBB inverts it almost exactly: ChatGPT cited bbb.org in 14 of 68, Gemini in none of 68.
So “does Reddit matter” has no single answer. It depends which engine your buyers use, and a business that tested one engine would reach the opposite conclusion from a business that tested the other.
What we would and would not do about it
We would not post about a client on Reddit, and we do not offer it. Writing promotional comments as if they were a customer’s is deceptive, it is against the site’s own rules, and the version of it that gets sold as strategy is the thing we look for when we are checking whether someone else has been manipulating a client’s results.
What the numbers do support is narrower and duller. Reddit threads about your category already exist, they are already being cited, and reading them tells you what buyers in your market complain about and compare. That is research, and it is free.
The BBB side is more actionable precisely because it was deliberately searched. If an engine restricts a search to bbb.org and names your company, the useful question is whether that returns anything current and consistent with your own site.

Questions we get asked about this.
Do I need to be on Reddit for AI to recommend my business?
Not as a deliberate tactic, on our evidence. The engines wrote 595 searches of their own and only one mentioned Reddit, yet they cited reddit.com in 34 of 168 local answers. It arrives through ordinary search results rather than a deliberate Reddit lookup.
Should I post about my own business on Reddit?
We do not recommend it and we do not do it. Promotional posting disguised as a customer's opinion breaks the site's rules and is deceptive. Reading existing threads about your category is useful research and carries none of that.
Which engines cite Reddit most?
In our sample, Gemini cited reddit.com in 14 of its 68 local answers and Perplexity in 13 of 32, against ChatGPT's 7 of 68. The BBB runs the other way: ChatGPT cited bbb.org in 14 of 68 and Gemini in none.
Is a BBB listing more useful than Reddit?
It was more deliberately sought in our sample: 30 of the 595 searches named the BBB, some restricted to bbb.org and naming one company. We measured the searches and the citations, not whether either changes an answer.
Does paying for reviews or posts work?
We will not help with it. Beyond being against most platforms' terms, manufactured visibility is detectable, and detecting it on behalf of a business that suspects a competitor or a past agency is work we will do.
We publish what we find.
