The definition

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of improving how a business appears in answers written by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews: whether it is named, whether it is described correctly and whether its own pages are cited as sources.

Every buying question came back with sources attached.

We asked ChatGPT 16 questions a Cincinnati customer might type before choosing a contractor, a surgeon, a funeral home or a flight school. All 16 answers cited sources, a median of 5 each, and the 84 citations came from 63 different domains.

That is what an answer engine gives a business to work with: the places it reads when it answers, and how the business is described there.

What AEO means in marketing

In marketing, AEO stands for answer engine optimization. An answer engine returns a written answer instead of a list of links, and a business either appears in that answer or it does not. The same work is also called generative engine optimization (GEO) and LLM optimization. How AEO and SEO differ.

What an answer is built from

In our sample, the sources behind the answers included a city government page, the Better Business Bureau, a trade association directory, a manufacturer's dealer locator, Reddit threads and businesses' own websites. The most-cited source appeared 6 times out of 84. There was no single list to get onto.

Not every question works that way. On general how-does-it-work questions, we have recorded answers that arrived with no sources at all. Content written for those questions has a weaker path into a chat answer than into Google's AI Overviews or Perplexity, so the useful first question about any AEO plan is which engine and which kind of question it targets.

What the work involves

For Google's AI features, Google says: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google's documentation.

Beyond that, the work is ordinary and checkable: accurate facts about the business in the places an engine reads, pages that answer a real buyer's question specifically enough to be worth quoting, and references from sources that already exist in the category. Measuring first shows which of those is missing for a particular business, instead of doing all of them.

An AEO strategy worth paying for

  • Name the questions. The ones buyers bring to AI about the trade, chosen independently so they can't be steered toward answers a business already wins.
  • Name the engines and the surface. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews behave differently, and API answers are not the consumer apps.
  • Sample repeatedly. Answers change between runs, so each question is asked more than once and every failed attempt is recorded.
  • Separate the outcomes. Mentioned, cited and recommended are different results. Why the difference matters.
  • Change what the evidence points to. Each recommendation traces back to a stored answer.
  • Recheck the same questions. On the same engines, so a comparison describes something real.

What the evidence supports

Most published numbers in this category come from companies selling the service. In our own review of the published research, we found no controlled before-and-after test on a live answer engine. The most repeated figure, "up to 40%", comes from a benchmark whose top methods instructed a model to invent quotes and sources. What that study measured.

That is why a recommendation should trace back to a stored answer with a date on it, and why no provider can promise a citation, a ranking or a timeline.

Questions we get asked about this.

What does AEO stand for?

Answer engine optimization: improving how a business is named, described and cited in answers written by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

They overlap. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, beyond being indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. AEO adds attention to the answers themselves, engine by engine.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Both describe the same aim. GEO, generative engine optimization, comes from a research paper of that name first posted in November 2023.

How is AEO measured?

By sampling: asking selected questions repeatedly on named engines and storing each answer with its sources, engine, model, settings and date. The counts describe those questions under those conditions, not market share.

Does llms.txt help with AEO?

Google says you do not need AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI features. We do not sell llms.txt.

Can AEO results be guaranteed?

No. Nobody controls a model's output, and answers change between runs and between model versions.
