A question with four different answers

Why doesn’t ChatGPT mention my business?

Most often because it never ran a search your business could have matched. ChatGPT does not look for what the buyer typed. It writes its own searches first, and on our own sample it wrote 6.1 of them for every question it was asked. If none of those searches touched anything about you, the answer was settled before your website was ever a candidate.

The short answer

There are four places this can break, and they need different work. In order of how often we find them:

  1. The engine searched for something else. It reformulated the question into its own words. On 595 recorded searches the engines wrote queries that were shorter and more specific than the question, a median of 8 words against 12, and not one of the 595 contained “near me”.
  2. It searched for competitors by name, and not for you. 157 of ChatGPT’s 478 searches used the site: operator to check a single domain, and several named a specific local company before looking it up.
  3. It found you and could not tell what you are. If the clearest statement of your category sits in an image, a slider or a PDF, there is nothing plain to lift.
  4. It found you, understood you, and put someone else forward anyway. This one is not a visibility problem, and no technical fix addresses it.

These are four different diagnoses. The reason to measure before changing anything is that the work for the first is nothing like the work for the fourth.

What we measured, and what it does not tell you

We recovered 595 searches that ChatGPT and Gemini ran while answering 188 questions, and published all of them. They show what the engines went looking for. They do not show that matching one of those searches would get a business named. We did not test that, so anyone who tells you the causal version is going past their evidence and probably ours.

What the searches are good for is narrowing the question. “Why am I invisible” has no answer. “Did the engine search for my category and city, or for named companies, and was I in either” does.

Being absent is not the same as being unmentioned once

A single answer is weak evidence. Engines vary between runs on identical wording, which is why one check of one engine on one day tells you very little. The question worth answering is whether you are absent across repeated runs, across the engines your buyers actually use, on the questions they actually ask.

That is also where most “AI visibility” reporting falls down. It blends being mentioned, being cited and being recommended into one score, and a score cannot tell you which of the four problems above you have.

Questions we get asked about this.

Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business?

Most often because it never ran a search your business could match. ChatGPT reformulates the question into its own searches first, 6.1 per answer on our sample of 78 answers. If none of those searches reached anything about you, the answer was decided before your site was a candidate.

Is my website the problem?

Sometimes, but it is one of four possible causes and not the most common one. The others are the engine searching for different words, searching for named competitors instead, or naming you and still putting someone else forward. Each needs different work, which is why diagnosing comes before changing anything.

Does adding more content get my business mentioned?

Not reliably, and we have no evidence that it does. We measured what engines searched for, not what changes an answer. More pages that do not state plainly what you are and where you work are unlikely to help.

How do I find out which of the four problems I have?

Ask the same buying questions repeatedly, across the engines your buyers use, and record whether you were absent, mentioned, cited or recommended in each answer. The pattern tells you which step is failing. A single query on a single engine does not.

Can anyone guarantee ChatGPT will mention my business?

No. Answers vary between runs, engines and model versions, and no provider controls what a model writes. We do not guarantee mentions, citations, traffic or revenue, and a guarantee from anyone else is a reason to ask what evidence supports it.
